by: Wade Weiler The day selected for reviewing this
eatery was
special: Sunday. On this day, I try to go for breakfast BEFORE the noon
hour,
so I can TRY to beat the Baptists there. My daughter and I had
attempted to
go to another popular breakfast place in Austin, but the waiting list
was
too long there. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Red River Cafe
not
too overrun with breakfast seekers. I was assured by my daughter that
this
was not a chain, and she was right. As we entered, the cafe had a nice
homey,
inviting ambiance. The tables and the chairs were comfy and had that
"hometown"
feel. The waitresses were pleasant, although this is not a small town
like
we normally seek.
The service was very quick and friendly. A touchstone for me is the orange juice. I am always pleasantly surprised when I find a place that offers "fresh squeezed" orange juice. The juice was good, and that always holds promise of a good breakfast to me. I ordered Migas. They offered a wonderful
variety of choices for sides: hash browns, black beans, home fries, or
fruit. I
chose the black beans. While the portions were not huge, they were just
right and satisfying to me. The coffee refills came regularly. The
total
bill for THREE of us was about $20. VERY reasonable! Note: Elevens
happen only for flawless excellence. And NO ONE earns an eleven for the
"Overall Rating.
